A day after trading forward Haywood Highsmith to ease their situation against the punitive NBA luxury tax, the Miami Heat on Saturday re-signed guard Dru Smith to a three-year contract.

The Miami Heat traded forward Haywood Highsmith to the Brooklyn Nets, the latter team announced Friday.

As for Highsmith, who made the news a couple of years ago for a difficult off-court situation, he may be able to get more minutes on a rebuilding Nets team before hitting free agency in summer 2026.

Brooklyn is able to absorb that into its open cap space, allowing the move to be made without the Nets needing to send salary back to Miami.

The Miami Heat have offloaded forward Haywood Highsmith in a cost-cutting move, sending him and a 2032 second-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for a protected 2026 second-rounder.

Durant was eventually dealt to the Houston Rockets as part of a seven-team swap on July 6.
