San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich – the NBA’s all-time winningest head coach – has made the decision to leave the team’s sideline.

Gregg Popovich spoke publicly Monday for the first time since suffering a stroke six months ago, saying at the news conference where the San Antonio Spurs formally introduced Mitch Johnson as his replacement that the time was right to make that move.

Gregg Popovich, who for nearly three decades as the Spurs’ coach had shaped the franchise in his steadfast and at times irascible image, is planning to retire.
