Falling inflation led the Central Bank of Egypt to cut its overnight lending rate by 225 basis points to 26.0% at its April 17 meeting, and by another 100 basis points on May 22.

On a monthly basis, there was deflation of 0.1%, versus inflation of 1.9% in May. Egypt slashed rates in April and May by a total of 325 basis points, bringing its key rate down to 24%.

Those tariffs, and rising inflation, could prompt the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates. The "core" inflation rate, which excludes food and energy prices, was 2.9% in the 12 months through June.
