The Trump White House is trying to short-circuit the Associated Press' lawsuit against the administration by altering the decades-old protocols over which news outlets band together to cover the president when space is limited.

Focused on reporting the president’s actions and statements, the 13 journalists that make up the press pool can sometimes blend into the background.

The White House’s move to take control of which outlets participate in the press pool is a break from a century of tradition with the White House Correspondents’ Association.

The White House hand picked the first group of outlets for a new system of media access in which it chooses who is able to cover President Donald Trump in certain settings, limiting the role of the three main newswires that traditionally distribute news of the presidency around the world.
