The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has temporarily blocked a federal judge’s order that directed President Donald Trump to return control of National Guard troops to California after he deployed them there following protests in Los Angeles over immigration raids.
In a statement responding to Saturday protests, Mayor Keith Wilson pledged that Portland police will uphold the law in the city, but will “not be used as agents of ICE.”
Judge Charles Breyer ordered the administration to return control of the National Guard to the California governor, but an appeals court stayed the extraordinary decision Thursday night.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced he is deploying thousands of Texas National Guard soldiers and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers ahead of planned anti-ICE protests across the state this weekend.
As of early Friday, the New Jersey National Guard has not been activated for the anti-Trump protests planned across the state Saturday.
Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said Sunday that a member of the National Guard and an FBI agent escorted him into Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's press conference last week before he was forcefully removed.
