Scientists predicted that Tuesday will be a fraction of a second shorter than normal as the Earth's rotation is moving faster.

But since 2020, the Earth has repeatedly broken its own record, with the shortest day on record July 5, 2024, when the Earth rotated 1.66 milliseconds faster than usual. In 2025, the shortest day so far has been July 10, when the Earth spun 1.36 milliseconds faster than normal.
