W ASHINGTON — The top military commander in charge of troops deployed to Los Angeles to respond to protests against immigration raids has asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth if 200 of those forces could be returned to wildfire fighting duty, two U.S. officials told The Associated Press on Monday.

A request was submitted to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth asking that 200 of the troops in California be returned to wildfire fighting duty.

The Trump administration recently approved a request from the military commander of the National Guard troops deployed to respond to immigration-related unrest in the Los Angeles area to return some of the troops to California's command.
