Austin firefighters responded to 9800 North Lamar Boulevard around 6:30 a.m. Sunday. Callers reported smoke coming from a large building that was later determined to be an abandoned bank. No injuries were reported.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the church. Bridges said the fire was initially upgraded to a second-alarm because a fire at a large, vacant building can easily get out of hand and crews wanted to make sure they had enough resources.
