Members of both parties have criticized the Republican candidate for challenging certain voting laws after the election had been held.

The board said the newly approved IDs include student IDs and employee IDs for educational institutions, some county and local governments, and charter schools.

The NCSBE approved nearly 100 student and employee identification cards for the 2025 municipal elections and the 2026 elections.

The ruling focused on a provision of a new law that transferred power to appoint members to the State Board of Elections from the governor to the state auditor. The law was passed shortly after new Democratic Gov.

Kyle Ingram has the details on the 2-1 ruling from Wake County Superior Court that came down Wednesday, blocking a GOP-led bill that would have transferred control over the election boards to the state auditor. The court said in its opinion that the bill violated the state constitution.

Gov. Josh Stein (D-NC) celebrated the decision affirming his power over the board, arguing the court declared "the legislature’s power grab unconstitutional."
