As he offered his thanks to the crowd during a Trump inaugural event, Musk put his right hand to his heart, then extended his hand to the crowd with his palm slightly raised. He turned around and made the same gesture again, before saying, "My heart goes out to you."

Musk makes his first federal political contribution in 2003, the same year he becomes chairman of Tesla. According to Federal Election Commission records, he gave the Bush-Cheney reelection campaign $2,000 that year, and the same amount to Democratic nominee John Kerry’s presidential campaign the following year.

Elon Musk, who has been accused of performing the salute at an inauguration event this week, shared social media post that questioned why other public figures hadn't been scrutinized.

The Roman salute is conditionally allowed in Italy and outright banned in Germany. German chancellor Olaf Scholz responded to Musk's gesture by saying, "We have the freedom of speech in Europe and in Germany," he said, "what we do not accept is if this is supporting extreme right positions."
