The temporary lifting of triple-digit trade levies between China and the U.S. while trade talks get under way removes the threat of an immediate stagflationary hit to the economy. This is very good news.

The United States and China reached a better-than-expected dealto temporarily slash tariffs, sending stocks and the U.S. dollar sharply higher, as the world's two biggest economies seek to end a damaging trade war that has stoked fears of recession.

25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico not covered under the 2018 USMCA trade agreement brokered during Trump's first term. The deal covers roughly half of all imports from Canada and about a third of those from Mexico, so the rest are subject to the new tariffs. Energy imports not covered by USMCA only will be taxed at 10%.
