DENVER - Safeway is closing nine locations across metro Denver, citing non-profitability as the main reason for the decision, according to a letter obtained by the DBJ.

Like Safeway, Albertsons cited unprofitability when it closed five Denver-area stores in 2009. Those locations now house a mix of Sprouts, Walmart Neighborhood Market, Save-A-Lot and Goodwill stores.
