This was the biggest stage of BYU runner James Corrigan’s career. If he got a time of 8:15, he would become an Olympian. The only problem was that he had never run an 8:15 steeplechase.

Corrigan wore the smile of a champion and now, a first-time Olympian. With a trip to the Paris games on the line, he completed the steeplechase in personal record time on Saturday, finishing at 8:13.

Corrigan, the Big 12 champion who won his 3,000-meter steeplechase heat at the NCAA West preliminaries in 8:38.31, is one of three national qualifiers from BYU in the event.
