Islam was killed in a mass shooting on Monday, July 28, in a Manhattan skyscraper where he was working paid security detail.

Islam came to New York City from his native Bangladesh when he was 20 years old, with "the promise of a better life," NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

Officer Didarul Islam, killed in the Midtown shooting, was honored at a Bronx funeral and is expected to be laid to rest in Totowa, New Jersey.
