Numerous train projects are in the crosshairs of the Trump administration, but Amtrak's modernization is speeding ahead.

Now, Amtrak is making its latest pitch for choosing rail over runway. On Aug. 28, the Acela-Amtrak's high-speed train that plies the 457 miles of track between Washington, D.C. and Boston-will put its NextGen equipment into revenue service: 28 high-tech, aerodynamic trains modeled off the TGV trains in France.

The Amtrak Acela rail cars are the first high-speed trains built in the United States; manufactured at Alstom in Hornell, NY.

South Dakota is one of the least populated states in America, alongside Wyoming. This also means low ridership demand, which is economically unviable for Amtrak to roll through the state if it lacks high-density travel corridors. South Dakota's transportation needs are also catered to by existing road infrastructure.
