President Donald Trump said Monday he agreed to “immediately pause” tariffs on Mexico for a month after a “very friendly” conversation with the country’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

The president’s threats to slap duties on goods imported from the European Union are part of a pattern of directing the harshest penalties at the United States’ closest allies.

Feb. 3, 10:41 a.m. EST Trump said on Truth Social he had a “very friendly conversation” with Sheinbaum in which she “immediately” agreed to send 10,000 Mexican soldiers to the border, and confirmed they will pause the tariffs on the country’s imports for one month while his administration negotiates with Mexican officials.
