Coastie saves 97-year-old man who fell in river in Grand Haven
GRAND HAVEN — When Seaman Joe Turk heard the splash and the calls of “man overboard,” he didn’t hesitate. His training kicked in, and the young “Coastie” dove into the Grand River channel. His quick actions are credited with saving the life of an elderly man who had fallen into the water.
U.S. Coast Guard rescues 97-year-old man after falling over 6 feet into Grand River
Seaman Joseph Turk, a CGC Katmai Bay crew member who has been in the Coast Guard for less than a year, immediately jumped into the water to rescue the man. He kept the man afloat by treading water for at least 20 minutes while crews worked to lower rescue equipment.
The Coast Guard rescued the 97-year-old man by lowering rescue equipment to the water. The rescue happened just before 7 p.m.
