A churro shop in Pilsen closed its doors Monday. So did a Mexican grocer in Chicago Heights. The owner of several Mexican restaurants in Elgin, himself the son of immigrants, shut his business for the day too.

Latino-owned businesses across the city shut their doors Monday to underscore their vital contributions to the U.S. economy, including the billions of dollars undocumented immigrants pay in taxes.

CHICAGO - Several Chicago area businesses are participating in a nationwide "Day Without Immigrants" protest by closing their doors on Monday. The protest comes as the new Trump administration conducts promised arrests of undocumented immigrants for deportation, including across the Chicago area.

CHICAGO (CBS) — A protest rally and march to Trump Tower originally planned for President Trump's second inauguration took place on Saturday in downtown Chicago, as activists called on the Trump administration to end violence in Gaza and halt plans for deportations.

Carlos Covarrubias is the owner of Xurro, a churro chain with 10 locations around Chicago and two in Florida. They employ about 50 together and all remained at home on Monday. Covarrubias also owns Isthmo, a Oaxacan restaurant in Lakeview; and Raizes Mexican Cocktail Bar & Kitchen in North Center. Both are normally closed on Mondays.

Organizers said they have tracked 250 businesses nationwide that were closed Monday in solidarity with immigrants.
